Over the last 7 weeks The Prospects Foundation has been at St Christopher's CE High School assisting with the delivering of biodiversity improvements, funded by the RHS.
Initially, a turf cutter was used to create scrapes in the field above the playing fields. Eco Group students then sowed UK native wildflower seeds, some of which have already started to come up! Some species we are finding include Cornflower, Poppy's, and Borage! All of which are fantastic for pollinators!
Students then helped to create planters, numbering 4 in total, these were then fitted between the seating areas in the courtyard. Eco Group students then filled these with soil and planted pollinator friendly herbs, such as Lavender, Mint, Creeping Thyme, and Sage (among many others).
We also built 2 green roof bin containers, which students planted up with various varieties of Stonecrops, as well as Asters and Chelsea Flowers. The Stonecrops will flower in late Summer, providing pollen to pollinators, as well as sprucing up the courtyards!
Finally, with a renovated polytunnel, students planted crops such as tomatoes, corn, and spring onions to be harvested and used in catering class!
