10 simple ways you can help the planet
- Reduce plastic consumption - switch to reusable items like cotton shopping bags and reusable water bottles. Refill household products (we have a refill station at the PROSPECTS shop on Broadway, Accrington).
- Reduce meat and dairy intake – these account for a high percentage of global carbon emissions.
- Shop local, shop seasonal and support local producers – this helps to reduce carbon emissions from transporting food over long distances.
- Reduce food waste – reuse or freeze leftovers, only buy as much as you need.
- Travel sustainably – walk, cycle, use public transport or car share.
- Repair, recycle, reduce – fix things that are broken, buy second hand, invest in quality items that last, only buy what you need.
- Choose sustainable clothing not ‘fast fashion’ - the fashion industry produces more emissions than air and sea travel combined. You can reduce this environmental impact by shopping from brands that are eco-friendly and use recycled fabrics. Or buy second-hand clothes from charity shops or swap clothes with friends.
- Save energy - turn off appliances when they’re not being used, swap to energy efficient LED lightbulbs, wear extra clothes when it’s cold, fix draughts in your house, insulate your loft – you’ll save on energy bills too.
- Protect wildlife – create spaces for wildlife in your garden, don’t litter, plant trees, don’t use pesticides, look after local green spaces.
- Volunteer with your local environmental charity - The PROSPECTS Foundation needs volunteers to take part in local environmental action projects. Please get in touch if you can help.
