Great Harwood PROSPECTS Panel

Great Harwood PROSPECTS Panel was set up in 1996 with local residents and representatives of other local groups to help improve Great Harwood's local environment and improve access to surrounding green areas.

The Panel was made up of representatives from other local groups such as Great Harwood Civic Society and the Community Action Group. Each brought their ideas to Panel meetings which help towards organising various projects and events in the town.

We enjoyed working with other local groups and residents in Great Harwood. Examples of our work can be seen at at Edge End Wood and Harwood Bar Wood where, with local residents, we carried out small tree felling and created wildlife habitats which have improved the area for both local people and wildlife. Another example is our partnership work with Lancashire County Council and Great Harwood Civic Society where we made improvements to the Great Harwood Nature Walk and footpaths around Great Harwood.

The Great Harwood Panel started several projects in 2013 and these included Boots and Bikes.

This project promoted walking and cycling to support a change in behaviour and lifestyle by providing opportunites to walk and cycle in and around Great Harwood.  A series of walking routes and cycle rides were developed and are published as electronic versions and as digital maps.  All routes start and finish in Great Harwood but extend beyond the town boundary into adjacent towns in Hyndburn & other boroughs that border Great Harwood to create circular routes.

There were family bike rides, guided walks, led cycle rides and cycle maintenance courses.  The aim was to introduce adults to walking and cycling and make these activities more attractive to females, older people and excluded adults and recognises the barriers to walking and cycling locally.  The project helped people to improve their health and encouraged them to consider walking and cycling as an alternative mode of travel. The emphasis was on those new to or returning to walking and cycling, those people wanting to be more active,  to highlight the range of walks and rides available locally and to encourage people to take up activities that do not involve the car.

The project promoted links to other local initiaitves such as Healthy Streets and sustainable transport which promote walking and cycling.  The project contributed to community development by addressing local needs and building upon skills and resources.

The Panel worked with Hyndburn Ramblers on the 'Boots' part of the project and CTC, the national cycling charity, on 'Bikes'.

The Boots and Bikes project was a huge success and has now been developed under the  Environmental Awareness theme, by The PROSPECTS Foundation, nature & Photography walks and cycling are now delivered for the benefit of the whole of Hyndburn.

During 2015 to 2016 there were 'Nature and Photography' walks from April to October.  A cycling group, Hyndburn CTC, was affiliated to CTC the national cycling charity which has now rebranded to Cycling UK.  People involved in the original Panel projects can keep in touch through the ArrodPedalPushers and ArrodWalkers Facebook groups.  Some walkers have also gone on to enjoy the monthly East Lancs Coach Rambles on a Sunday.
The Panel has been involved in the campaign to open the Martholme Viaduct on the old Great Harwood Loop railway track since  2005.  Both web-based and hard copy petitions were started and the Martholme Viaduct Facebook page was launched.  As a result a new group 'Martholme Greenway'  has been formed by supporters from Simonstone, Read, Hyndburn and people with an interest in cycling, walking, the environment, railway and mining history so this group is now taking the campaign forward.
Thousands of bulbs were planted in the autumn at entrances to the town and the Panel is maintaining the two entrance planters during 2016.

The Future

New ideas for environmental projects in the town are being sought.  The Panel is not currently meeting as new committee member are needed to run and support the Panel and any new projects.

The Panel is not currently meeting.  New people are needed to form a committee and develop new projects.
