Harwood Bar Wood

Harwood Bar Wood

During 2012-2013 Ian and Michael, together with other volunteers, have continued to keep on top of the footpath, coppicing shrubs, small tree felling, Himalayan Balsam pulling and general maintenance.  Lots of bird boxes and a bird feeding station have been installed.  Sadly several bird boxes were stolen.

On a brighter note with the support of the Nature Walks Monday Conservation Volunteers Group there have been two or three sessions of hedge laying.  Thanks to the Nature Walks continuation funding more hedge laying can be done in the coming months.  It is now considered better to lay hedges in sections to create different habitats for birds and insects and not do a whole hedge at once.  Ian Butterworth from The PROSPECTS Foundation is working with Ian and Michael on the management of the wood.

Some trees in the wood have preservation orders on them and this is being taken into consideration in the development of a future action plan.

A site visit has taken place with HBC officers and PROSPECTS so there is now a list of ideas that can form the basis of a funding bid to pay for a survey and a management action plan.  Further funding can then be sought to carry out the work.
