Woody is our woodland management social enterprise.  Woody was incorporated as a 'community interest company' (CIC) in March 2012.  The company is run by a board of seven directors and works on a voluntary basis with external support brought in as and when reqired.  The company has already taken on a number of contracts and trained up volunteers in chainsaws and charcoal production.  The group continues to look for a base for the operation and aims to increase the number of products that can be produced from Hyndburn's woodlands.

So far the Woody volunteers have been involved in:

  • selective tree thinning along the West Accrington Recreation Corridor.
  • an intensive chainsaw training week at Beacon Fell Country Park,
  • selective thinning at Jackhouse Nature Reserve in Oswaldtwistle,
  • selective thinning along West Accrington Recreation Corridor,
  • attending and passing a LANTRA Chainsaw training course,
  • a charcoal burn using wood felled alongside the West Accrington Recreation Corridor,
  • a large woodland thinning contract at the Coppice / Peel Park in Accrington,
  • tree planting and wildflower meadow at Jackhouse Nature Reserve as part of restoration works on the slipway,
  • making products from felled Larch from the Coppice using their new mobile sawmill (Logosol M8)
  • making & then installing 25 bird boxes, 5 benches and 10 waymarkers from the Larch that Woody felled on the Coppice.
  • Hyndburn charcoal also goes on sale in the One Planet shop.  Part of Woody's sustainability agenda!
  • large and small bags of Hyndburn charcoal are now avilable from the PROSPECTS Environment Centre at 54 Broadway, Accrington
