Connecting with Nature

Through this project PROSPECTS will deliver environmental taster programmes at four community hubs across Hyndburn.  The taster programmes will provide a range of activities for people of all ages.

The activities will be run at four community sites - Piggy Park Community Garden in Rishton, the GrOwing WILD allotment site in Baxenden, Hyndburn Homes' Community House/Garden in Huncoat and Acorn Recovery in Accrington.

We have purposefully identified each of these sites in order to provide a wide geographical spread across the borough in order that as many people as possible can have the opportunity to attend without the need for a car.

Activities will include a variety of sessions based aound environmental themes including practical conservation work, basic food growing, traditional crafts and general horticulture.

Running alongside these activities will be educational sessions aimed at young children. These will be focused on children learning about nature in a fun and exciting way. For children and younger volunteers John Muir Discorvery Awards will be available to promote the use of wild spaces, interaction and enjoyment of the outdoors.

Volunteers and young people will be recruited from the local communities and groups near to the hub sites. There will be outreach opportunities to encourage people to get involved in the long-term at the hubs.

Adult volunteers will be registered with AQA so they are able to gain Unit Award Scheme Certificates whilst taking part in the activities provided.

With regard to the protection and improvement of the environment, the vast majority of the activities that will take place are based around education, awareness and appreciation of the environment both in terms of the community hub sites and also other sites close to each hub.

Funding for this project is through the Windfall Fund and Newground Together.
