Weekly Volunteer Activities 

PROSPECTS holds regular CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER activities at a number of sites around Hyndburn.  Please click on the sites below to find an activity near you.   Click on the What's On above for dates and times.

Monday and Tuesday (see the July 2019 Newsletter and What's On above) for details of volunteering opportunities in July.  The dates are Monday 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd and Tuesday 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd July.
Sessions are 10:30 to 2:30 or as much as you can do!

Activities

1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd July (Monday) 10:00am = PEDAL AWAY HYNDBURN - Beginner/ Back in the Saddle rides every Monday. For anyone needing to gain skills, learn gears, build confidence (& calf muscles!) and generally just wanting to have a fun ride. Starting at 10am from the cycle hub on Eagle Street, Accrington (opposite Tesco). We’ve got bikes, helmets, ride leaders and a big, warm welcome. If you’re thinking of coming along; just do it. Nick and Nancy will be there to help get you cycling. Bikes and helmets available or you can bring your own. Supported by The PROSPECTS Foundation and a grant from the Windfall Fund. £1 donation. Please phone Nancy on 07469148245
 
2nd July (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon = GARDENING CLUB – Accrington Women’s Centre Gardening Club is a small friendly group that meet for a chat and a brew and to have a go at growing their own food and plants for the home, a garden or on a windowsill. Companion planting and making your own plants feeds. They meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Lancashire Women’s Centre, 21-23 Blackburn Road, Accrington BB5 1LF. 3rd July (Wednesday) 10:00am to 2:00pm = HYNDBURN VOLUNTEER WORKPARTY with PROSPECTS & The Canal and River Trust. Would you like to meet new people, enjoy some healthy exercise in the great outdoors and make a difference to your local canal? Our new Hyndburn Volunteer Work Party could just be the thing you are looking for. Join PROSPECTS as we collaborate with the Canal & River Trust to improve the towpaths through Hyndburn. This workparty will take place alongside the Leeds/Liverpool Canal at Tottleworth Bridge No 108, Spring Street, Rishton at the picnic area. Volunteers are needed. Tasks may include: Litter-clearance, towpath repairs, vegetation management, plus much more to improve the picnic area… Wear suitable clothing and footwear. All tools, hi Vis and life-jackets will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch for a picnic at 1:15pm approx. 9th July (Tuesday) 10:00am to 12 noon approx = DISCOVER PART OF THE LADYBIRD TRAIL & L&L CANAL - This amble not a ramble will start at Mercer Park gates near the roundabout at the bottom of Lower Barnes Street, Clayton-le-Moors BB5 5TA. Near the bus stop! Grid Ref: SD 743 313.  A circular walk on field footpaths through farmland, on hard tracks and towpath. We will visit Clayton Forest, the Baby Millennium Woodland, the old railway line at Great Harwood, the Hyndburn and see the fish pass with time for a chat and to relax. This walk is not suitable for prams or trampers due to steps and stiles. People should meet at 0950 for a PROMPT 10:00am start. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Only one dog per walker though! Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and this rural walk and bring along a drink of water. The walks is for approximately two hours and the distance will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day. PART OF DISCOVER HYNDBURN walks. 17th July (Wednesday) 10:00am = BALSAM BASHING with Baxenden Forum meeting at the carved stone on Hill Street. Himalayan Balsam is an invasive non-native species that is threatening the countryside. Help stop the spread by joining us for this FREE Balsam Bashing event. ALL ages and abilities can join in! 23rd July (Tuesday) 11:00am to 1:00pm = All Saints Gardening Club with PROSPECTS.  The next workshop is at All Saints’ Church, Clayton-le-Moors.  The gardening will last for ninety minutes with lunch in church at 12.30pm.  They are happy for anyone to pop in for a few minutes if they cannot manage the full workshop They are always grateful for any healthy flowers, plants or bushes to be donated and left at church around the start of the workshop at 11.00am. The workshops are open to everyone. All equipment and refreshments are provided. 24th July (Wednesday) 10:00am to 12noon approx. =DISCOVER HUNCOAT VILLAGE & THE L&L CANAL. Part of the Huncoat Trail will be included – the low level part! This walk will be taken at a leisurely pace to enable walkers to discover the area and with time for a chat and to relax. This amble not a ramble will meet at the Village Stocks bottom of Higher Gate Rd, Huncoat, Accrington BB5 6LH (Grid Ref SD777304) at 09:50 for a 10:00am start. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. Only one dog per walker though! Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the weather and a rural walk and bring along a drink of water. There is no parking at the start so please use local street parking but NOT on the bend!. The walks is for two hours and the distance will vary according to the speed of the walkers on the day.
